Tomoko 87

Heads up this keyboard uses clone switches!

Switches:

MX Blue

About:

Here we have the most popular cheap mechanical keyboard (also probably the cheapest mechanical keyboard period), The Tomoko 87! The Tomoko 87 is a TKL keyboard (while a full version does exist it is less popular) The keyboard uses SwitchMaster switches, a brand no-one else seems to use, despite this it seems to work with standard o-rings, which makes me think it should be possible to use any Cherry MX aftermarket key-caps with this keyboard! It comes with a key-cap puller, which you may need as some users have reported the key-caps starting to fade within hours of first using it. Users reported that switches are louder and less nice than the mainstream clones or real Cherry MX blue switches. Despite being cheap its got some premium features such as a metal back plate, every keyboard around $150 that uses a plastic back plate should be ashamed right now! The metal frame does not flex under load! And the keyboard is water proof, so it'll pay for yourself if your like me and spill water on your cheap $10 keyboard every couple of months! Surprisingly the keyboard works nicely on mac and Linux. Interestingly it has a lower percentage of 1 or 2 star reviews when compared to some other keyboards, both in and out of its price range! Now in order to get this cheap Tomoko (or whoever actually makes these) did need to cut some corners, for example the keyboard only has 1 super key. The keyboard uses thin low quality key-caps (but you wont notice that difference if your coming from a basic $10 keyboard) and does not have a detachable cable. Some users reported QC issues, with interesting mixed results, sometimes if a user left a review saying they are having problems, the company would reach out and replace it. Others stated they contact the company and did not revive a reply

Pros:

  • Can swap the key-caps with other Cherry MX key-caps
  • Can work with normal O-rings
  • CHEAP
  • Comes with a key-cap puller
  • Metal back-plate!
  • WATER PROOF! Will literally pay for itself if you keep drowning your poor keyboards.

Cons:

  • Key-caps could fade very fast
  • QC issues but it is cheap as chips so you could burn through 3 or 4 of them before you've thrown out as much money as other keyboards
  • Some users thought the logo is annoying
  • Thin key-caps
  • Uncommon clone switches

Additional Comments:

  • An RGB version exists but is not worth it as you can't change the colors, its got 1 mode, on.
  • Consider going for the Red Dragon Keyboard instead of you want a cheap keyboard, it may be just a gamer focused re-brand of this keyboard.
  • cool floating key design.
  • https://youtu.be/Kjo8Pl2DWGI?t=161 A test of the water resistance!
  • Isn't SwitchMaster the name of something else? Somesort of toy company.
  • Re-branded as Plugabble or Lenovo or a bunch of a others according to TaeKeyboards (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZDL7L9LP7I)
  • Tomoko sounds like the name of a certain cute shut in.
